ANCIENT THEATRE OF EPIDAVROS
The Ancient theatre of Epidavros is found in distance 30 km away from Nafplio and 12 12 km away from Ancient Epidavros. It constitutes one of the most significant and beautiful archaeological sites in Greece.
Nearby are found the ruins of the temple of Maleata – Appolo and the Sanctuary of Asklepios, which having remained open for more than 1000 years are resonant with history.
The theatre of Epidavros seats 14.000 people approximately. It was built by Polyclitus the younger, an architect and sculptor from the city of Argos.
The construction structure of the theatre included three basic departments, the concave, the orchestra and the stage. Due to its architecture the theatre has an excellent acoustics. It is characteristic that even the audience of the most high tier, can hear the lines of the actors in stage, with out technical means.
Excavations at the that eventually revealed the theatre commenced in 1881.
